Why do you want to work here?

A simple but direct question; this is a good one because it will give you strong insight into the motivation of the candidate.

If their response is just about the salary, well are they really the person you want. If they talk about the role being a career step to other jobs, then this can be exciting for you as long as your company can accommodate their career growth expectations.

If the candidate cannot give you any insight as to why they want to work at your organisation then again I suggest think about what that says; are they just applying for a job for a jobs sake – and there is nothing wrong with that – but be aware the more successful employee tends to be a person who has an element of pride associated to working with the company that employs them (don’t doubt that such pride can grow in such a candidate as the one discussed above).
